Mano And Metate. – Quintessential grinding stones of ancient Mesoamerican peoples; food was prepared by grinding it on a large flat stone with the use of a flat or round hand stone. Grinding stones were also used to prepare ceremonial pigments and paints. These artifacts are found in large numbers at most archaeological sites near residences and temples. The metate is a stone carved flat or as a concave basin, where maize and other foods or pigments wre placed to be ground. The mano was an eongated stone that was rounded or squared.
